Dermal Fillers
A key part of aging, and one that we are not always fully aware of, is loss of volume in the fat pads of the face. This loss of volume creates hollows, sagginess and a change in facial shape that makes us look older and more tired. It is generally this progressive loss of volume that contributes to the ageing look more than simply lines on the face.
Dermal fillers provide volumisation to the face. In the clinic we use a variety of fillers such as Maili, Juvederm, Teosyl and others to provide the best choice of product for each patient requirements.
Dermal fillers are made of Hyaluronic Acid, a naturally occurring sugar within our bodies. We find that over time as we age Hyaluronic Acid depletes and this is particularly more noticeable in the face. Hyaluronic Acid holds onto water and creates a slight plumping effect within the tissues that results in a more healthy and refreshed appearance.
The cross-linked Hyaluronic Acid in filler is broken down much slower than our own indigenous Hyaluronic acid and can last an estimated 12 to 18 months. Thus, filler treatments do not need to be repeated as regularly as anti-wrinkle treatments .
Different volumes of filler are required for different people. Larger amounts of dermal filler strategically placed can create the effect of a non-surgical facelift. Smaller amounts can be used to correct minor imperfections, indentations and scars.

What can I expect from a dermal filler consultation?
It is very important to understand what it is you want from the treatment and ideally, find the perfect blend between what we are able to produce for you non-surgically and what you feel you need in order to look your best. We hope to empower you with dermal filler education, as once you understand the process and purpose of the treatment, you are more likely to be pleased with your actual result.
These are the most common fears people have regarding dermal fillers and it is understandable given the amount of substandard aesthetic work that we see in the public every day.
At the Extensa Clinic, you can relax. We are looking for natural results that simply create the best version of you. We want people to notice improvements in you but assume that you are simply making good life choices, living better, getting a better nights sleep or on a fitness burst, rather than knowing exactly what type of treatment you have had done.
Are there possible complications?
In experienced hands, complications are exceptionally rare. Vascular occlusion is the main concerning complication of dermal filler treatments. This is when the dermal filler has been injected into a blood vessel and blocks the blood flow to the surrounding tissues. This is a rare and reversible complication. Vascular occlusion is predominantly avoided with good anatomical knowledge, slow injection technique and experience.
Infections are another concern that we avoid by endeavouring to follow strict infection control protocols throughout the clinic to avoid the risk of infection and for reassurance for our patients.
Although, not often seen, allergic reactions can occur in some people. We have all the necessary medications and training within the clinic to safely manage such an attack if it were to manifest.
